iGaming Glossary / Outside Bet

What is Outside Bet?

A roulette bet on large groups such as red, black, odd or even. It pays less but hits more often.

An outside bet in roulette covers a large group of numbers at once, such as all the red numbers, all the black, odd, even, or the high and low halves. Because it covers so much of the wheel, it wins fairly often, but the payout is small, usually close to even money.

These bets are popular with cautious players who want steadier, more frequent wins rather than rare big hits. They are the opposite of inside bets, which target single numbers or tiny groups for much larger payouts but far less often.

Outside bets do not change the house edge, which stays the same across the table. They simply spread your risk more thinly. To see how they fit into a session, read our roulette guide.
