iGaming Glossary / Wild
What is Wild?
A symbol that substitutes for others to help complete wins.
A wild is a slot symbol that stands in for most other symbols to help complete a winning combination, a bit like a joker in a deck of cards. If a line is one symbol short, a wild in the right spot can fill the gap and turn a near miss into a win.
Wilds usually substitute for the regular paying symbols but not the special ones such as scatters or bonus symbols. Many games build on the basic wild with extra behaviour, like expanding to fill a reel, sticking in place, walking across the screen or carrying a multiplier.
Wilds are one of the most common ways slots create wins beyond the base paytable. See our slots guide for the main wild types.
