iGaming Glossary / Card Counting
What is Card Counting?
Tracking the ratio of high to low cards in blackjack to time bigger bets. It is legal but does not work against shuffled live RNG and is discouraged by casinos.
Card counting is a blackjack technique where a player keeps a running tally of the high and low cards that have been dealt. When many high cards remain, the odds tilt slightly toward the player, who then raises their bets to take advantage.
It is not cheating and it is not illegal, but casinos strongly dislike it and can ask skilled counters to leave a physical table. Online it rarely works at all, because the cards are reshuffled by a random number generator after most hands, so there is no deck to track.
For online play, learning basic strategy is a far more practical way to reduce the house edge. 18+, and never bet beyond your budget.
