iGaming Glossary / Return to Player (RTP)

What is Return to Player (RTP)?

The long-run percentage of stakes a game is built to pay back, for example 96%. The rest is the house edge.

Return to Player, or RTP, is the share of all bets a game is designed to pay back over a very long run. An RTP of 96% means that across millions of spins the game returns about 96 units for every 100 staked. The remaining slice is the house edge, the built-in advantage that keeps the casino in profit.

RTP is a long-term average, not a promise for your session. You can lose on a 97% game and win big on a 94% one in the short term, because luck dominates over a handful of spins.

Still, a higher RTP gives you slightly better value over time, so it is worth comparing. The paytable usually lists it. Our RTP guide explains how to use the figure sensibly.
