iGaming Glossary / RNG (Random Number Generator)

What is RNG (Random Number Generator)?

The certified software that produces random outcomes in digital casino games.

An RNG, or Random Number Generator, is the software that decides outcomes in digital casino games. Every spin, card, or roll comes from a stream of numbers generated so quickly and unpredictably that the result cannot be guessed or steered. It is what makes an online slot fair rather than scripted.

Reputable games use RNGs that independent labs test and certify, checking that the numbers are genuinely random and not tilted over time. Regulators usually require this before a game can go live.

The RNG does not remember past results, so a slot is not due a win after a dry spell, and a hot streak does not mean more are coming. Each outcome is independent. Crypto sites sometimes pair this idea with provably fair tools so players can verify single results.
