iGaming Glossary / Cluster Pays
What is Cluster Pays?
A slot format that pays for groups of touching matching symbols rather than fixed lines.
Cluster Pays is a slot format that rewards groups rather than lines. Instead of matching symbols along set paylines from left to right, you win when enough identical symbols sit next to each other, touching horizontally or vertically, to form a cluster.
This changes how wins appear. A typical cluster slot uses a larger grid, often seven by seven, and needs a minimum number of connected symbols, such as five, to pay. It usually pairs well with cascading reels, since clearing a winning cluster lets new symbols drop in for more clusters.
If you are used to traditional paylines, check the paytable to see the minimum cluster size and how the grid behaves. Our slots guide covers the main formats.
