iGaming Glossary / Payline

What is Payline?

A set pattern across the reels that pays when matching symbols land along it.

A payline is a fixed path that runs across the reels, often left to right. When enough matching symbols land on that path, the line pays out. Classic slots had a single line through the middle, while modern games may offer ten, twenty, or many more lines at once.

More paylines usually means more chances to hit a win on any given spin, but it can also raise the total stake, since you often bet a small amount per line. Reading the paytable tells you how many lines are active and what each one pays.

Paylines are just one way games award wins. Some titles drop them entirely in favour of cluster or ways systems. See our slots guide if you want a fuller picture of how slot wins are built.
