iGaming Glossary / Hit Frequency
What is Hit Frequency?
How often a slot returns any win. A high hit frequency means frequent small wins, not bigger ones.
Hit frequency tells you how often a slot lands any winning combination, usually shown as a percentage of spins. A hit frequency of 25% means roughly one in four spins returns something, though that win can be smaller than your stake.
It is easy to confuse with payout size, but they are separate things. A game can hit very often while still paying back tiny amounts most of the time, so a steady stream of small wins does not mean you are ahead overall.
High hit frequency usually pairs with lower volatility and calmer sessions, while low hit frequency often points to bigger but rarer wins. Pair this idea with RTP and volatility to judge a slot. Read more in our volatility guide.
