iGaming Glossary / Volatility
What is Volatility?
How a slot pays out, from low (frequent small wins) to high (rare large wins).
Volatility describes the rhythm of a slot's payouts. A low volatility game gives you frequent but small wins, which keeps your balance steady and your session long. A high volatility game pays much less often, but the wins that do land can be large.
Volatility is separate from return to player. RTP is the share of all stakes a game pays back over time, while volatility is about how lumpy or smooth those returns feel along the way. Two games can share the same RTP yet feel completely different to play.
Pick low volatility for steady entertainment on a small budget, and high volatility if you can accept dry spells while chasing bigger hits. See volatility explained for examples.
