iGaming Glossary / Geolocation
What is Geolocation?
Technology that checks a player's location to enforce where a casino may legally operate.
Geolocation is the system a casino uses to confirm where you actually are when you log in or place a bet. It pulls together signals like your IP address, GPS, Wi-Fi networks and sometimes a small piece of software on your device to pin down your region.
Licences are tied to specific countries or states, so an operator has to block players from places where it is not allowed to offer real money play. If the checks say you are outside the permitted area, the site will stop you depositing or wagering.
It can feel intrusive, but it keeps the casino on the right side of its licence and protects players in restricted markets. Using tools to fake your location usually breaks the terms and can void winnings. See how licensing affects your choice in our guide to choosing a casino.
