iGaming Glossary / Avalanche

What is Avalanche?

Another name for cascading reels, where winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in, allowing more than one win from a single spin.

Avalanche is one of several names for the cascading reels mechanic, made famous by certain popular slots. When you land a win, the symbols that formed it disappear and new symbols fall down to fill the gaps.

This matters because a single paid spin can produce a chain of wins, one after another, as long as fresh winning combinations keep forming. Many games add a rising multiplier that grows with each step of the chain, which is where the big results come from.

Different studios call the same idea tumble, cascade or avalanche, so do not be confused by the name. What counts is reading the paytable to see how the chains and any multipliers actually work.
