iGaming Glossary / Edge Sorting

What is Edge Sorting?

Exploiting tiny imperfections on card backs to read values. Casinos treat it as cheating and void wins.

Edge sorting is a technique where a player spots tiny printing flaws on the backs of playing cards. Because some patterns are not perfectly symmetrical, a sharp-eyed player can tell certain high cards from low ones before they are turned over, which gives an unfair read on the deck.

Why it matters: it became famous through high-stakes baccarat cases where huge sums were won and then disputed in court. Casinos and courts have generally ruled it a form of cheating rather than skill, because it relies on a defect the player conceals.

The honest takeaway is to steer well clear. Casinos void wins gained this way, keep the stake and can ban the player. In online and live games the cards are dealt and shuffled in ways designed to make it impossible anyway.
